Exercise After Plastic Surgery

Can You Be Too Old For Plastic Surgery?

As a woman proud in her 50s, I have had many – and I mean many – conversations about the work I have had done for friends, family, and more commonly women I meet through both social media and the odd time day to day and a very common response I’ve had back is, “Am I not too old now?” This is usually in the remarks: I got plastic surgery in my 20s, 30s and more recently in my 50s. It’s clear that these women I’ve had personal interactions with want to make a change, but in some way feel they have missed the opportunity or maybe feel like they are too old for a specific procedure, such as a mummy makeover or a breast enhancement.

I thought this was a very interesting topic up for debate or a place to find some external encouragement, as at our age, we don’t get enough of it. I have always been a strong believer that if something bothers you, and I mean it’s not something that didn’t bother you, and an indirect or direct comment has changed your perspective on it and is something that affects your confidence, you should go for it.

Plastic surgery can have such a bad rap, and I know we should embrace our natural beauty, but I don’t think anyone should be forced to live with something they don’t want to.

Is 50 Too Old for Plastic Surgery?

I am going to start off by saying no, not at all! You might be extremely happy with your face and body for your entire life, but in our 40s and 50s, our bodies, skin elasticity and everything in between begin to change, and there is no beating around the bush; it’s not always a pleasant experience for women. Some women are very proud of their appearance, whether it’s because they use it as a tool, it has brought them joy, or they are really proud of their family features and at no point should they be restricted in maintaining it.

Most plastic surgery procedures are specifically made to combat the natural signs of ageing, such as facelifts, eyelid lifts, neck lifts and many others. These, especially when you choose the right surgeon, won’t change the structure of your face and will just turn back the clock.

I don’t want this topic to feel pushy for any woman to walk away and then feel like they need a facelift or anything else. I want you to walk away knowing that there are options there that can leave you with the most natural results that no one will be able to tell you had surgery.

What Procedures Do 50+ Women Feel They Are Too Old For?

Breast Procedures

I have had so many discussions with friends and friends of friends about insecurities, and breasts are a very common point in the conversation. As we all know, childbirth, breastfeeding, and ageing can change whether they double in size, begin to sag or they just lose volume and shape, and while there is not one definition of beautiful and we should empower and love our bodies, it doesn’t mean even at 50 you can’t do what feels right and makes you happy. I have had friends that have had breast enlargement, boob lifts and breast asymmetry correction, and they have never regretted it and in some cases they wished they hadn’t done it earlier.

Face Procedures

I think for women in their 50s, these have to be some of the most popular procedures and maybe the ones where you feel less old to do them, if that makes sense. I definitely feel if you aren’t happy with your skin, you do the research and see what is best suited for you, whether you want the most natural results or you want a specific look.

Body Procedures

I think this is another one where women may feel like it’s too late to consider but you are never too old to feel good, whether it’s removing loose skin, getting rid of stubborn fat or treating certain areas that have been bothering you.

Are There Alternatives?

Plastic surgery isn’t for everyone, and understandably, it’s a bit intimidating. The recovery process can be very off-putting, and I don’t want to end this discussion with you thinking you are limited to plastic surgery, and on the contrary, I attend regular medical-grade facials that have been tested, regulated and approved by doctors, nurses and all the important people.

I would personally recommend going to a nurse-run skincare aesthetic clinic, as they are trained and have the medical and trusting background that you know the results will eventually appear. Treatments that I have invested time and money into, as I haven’t had any plastic surgery on my face, have been microneedling, Zaffiro and regular Obagi facials.

These treatments can reverse some ageing but also are a great preventative, as I haven’t developed any harsh wrinkles while the skin on my face and neck hasn’t begun sagging. Overall, I am really happy, but I do understand and advocate for women when they want to make a change, and these medical facials can’t provide the results they want.

I personally would never be opposed to more plastic surgery in the future and on my face. This would purely be based on whether I had the means and if something bothered me so much that I wanted to change it.
